Pentair Rebel V2 Stays in One Area — Incomplete Pool Coverage

When the Rebel V2 cleans only one section of the pool and does not reach the full floor and walls, the Pentair manual identifies five causes: incorrect wheel RPM (too slow to build momentum for full coverage), the eyeball diverter pushing the cleaner back toward the same area, a hose that is too short to reach the far end, incorrect hose float placement that affects the cleaner's balance and turning, and a swivel assembly that binds instead of rotating freely. Work through each check below.

Check 1: Verify Flow/RPM and Adjust the Regulator Valve

A cleaner running below 16 RPM lacks the drive force to navigate the full pool. Low RPM is the most common cause of incomplete coverage on the Rebel V2.

  1. With the pump running and the cleaner in the pool, bring the cleaner close enough to the surface to observe a wheel
  2. Count full wheel rotations over 60 seconds — target is 16–18 RPM
  3. If RPM is below 16, rotate the regulator valve adjustment knob clockwise to increase flow
  4. Re-measure after each adjustment — allow 30 seconds for the cleaner to stabilize
  5. The optional Flow Gauge (P/N 41200-0212) can be installed on the regulator valve to read flow directly without needing to count RPM

Check 2: Redirect the Eyeball Diverter

The eyeball diverter (P/N 41201-0236) is the adjustable return fitting in the pool wall. If it is aimed toward the area the cleaner is concentrating in, it creates a current that continually steers the cleaner back there.

  1. With the pump running, observe where the return flow from the eyeball fitting is directed
  2. Rotate the eyeball fitting to direct return water toward the area of the pool the cleaner is not reaching — the return current should work with the cleaner's movement, not against it
  3. Observe cleaner behavior for several minutes to evaluate whether coverage improves
  4. Make additional small adjustments as needed

Check 3: Check Hose Length

If the hose assembly is too short, the cleaner physically cannot reach the far end of the pool before the hose goes taut and the cleaner reverses. The hose must reach from the connection fitting to the furthest point on the pool floor.

  1. Turn off the pump and remove the cleaner and hose from the pool
  2. Lay the hose sections end-to-end in a straight line on the pool deck from the suction/return fitting to the furthest pool corner
  3. The total hose length must reach the furthest point — add hose sections if it falls short
  4. Verify the leader hose is installed in the correct position per page 2 of the Rebel V2 manual — the leader hose attaches between the first regular hose section and the swivel and must be in the specific position noted in the manual

Check 4: Check Hose Float Placement

The hose float (P/N 360300) keeps the hose off the pool floor so it does not drag and impede the cleaner's movement. If the float is on the wrong hose section, the hose drags, creating uneven resistance that limits where the cleaner can travel.

  1. Turn off the pump and remove the cleaner and hose from the pool
  2. Locate the hose float on the hose assembly
  3. Refer to page 2 of the Rebel V2 manual for the correct hose section on which the float should be positioned — it must be on the specific section indicated, not any adjacent section
  4. Reposition the float if it has moved, and reinstall the hose assembly

Check 5: Check the Swivel Assembly

The swivel at the top of the cleaner body allows the hose to rotate independently from the cleaner, enabling it to change direction freely. A stiff or seized swivel prevents the cleaner from turning and causes it to repeatedly return to the same path.

  1. Turn off the pump and remove the cleaner from the pool
  2. Grasp the swivel body and the hose connection above it separately and rotate them against each other — the swivel should turn smoothly with minimal resistance through a full 360 degrees
  3. If the swivel is stiff, inspect it for grit, mineral buildup, or debris in the bearing surfaces
  4. Rinse the swivel components in clean water and work them back and forth to free any binding deposits
  5. If the swivel cannot be freed by cleaning, replace the swivel assembly
