Pentair Kreepy Krauly Not Moving or Not Pulsating
The Kreepy Krauly moves by pulsating — a flapper inside the cleaner opens and closes rhythmically to create suction pulses that drag the cleaner across the pool floor. When the cleaner sits motionless or fails to pulse, the root cause is almost always insufficient suction or a blocked flapper. The Pentair manual identifies four specific corrective actions for this symptom. Work through them in order before assuming the cleaner itself is defective.
Step 1: Check Suction Valve Positions
The Kreepy Krauly requires the full suction output of the pump directed to the cleaner's suction line. If the main drain or other suction lines are open, the cleaner shares suction with those lines and cannot develop enough flow to operate.
- Turn the main drain valve to the fully closed position
- Close all other suction lines (any additional skimmers or floor drains not connected to the cleaner)
- Verify the cleaner's dedicated suction line valve is fully open
- Restart the pump and observe the cleaner for pulsation within 60 seconds
Step 2: Check the Filter and Pump Strainer Basket
Debris accumulation in the filter or pump strainer basket restricts flow through the entire system. Even a partially clogged basket can drop flow below the 25 GPM minimum the Kreepy Krauly requires to operate.
- Turn off the pump
- Open the pump strainer pot lid and remove the strainer basket — clear all debris and rinse the basket
- Check the pump strainer O-ring for cracks or deformation — replace if worn
- Check all skimmer baskets and clear any debris
- Check the filter pressure gauge — if pressure is elevated above the clean baseline by 8–10 PSI or more, backwash a sand or DE filter, or clean a cartridge filter
- Reinstall baskets, close the strainer lid, and restart the pump
Step 3: Inspect the Cleaner Flapper
The flapper is the rubber valve inside the Kreepy Krauly body that creates the pulsating motion. Debris lodged against the flapper prevents it from moving, stopping all pulsation. The manual describes the access procedure on page 8.
- Remove the cleaner from the pool and place it on a flat surface
- Insert a flathead screwdriver into the slot on the baffle plate and twist to release the clips — lift the baffle plate off
- Pull the flapper out from the cleaner body
- Inspect both faces of the flapper and the flapper seat for debris — leaves, pebbles, and grit are the most common culprits
- Clear all debris from the flapper and the interior of the cleaner body around the flapper seat
- Check the flapper for tears or stiffness — a damaged flapper will not create a proper pulse and should be replaced
- Snap the baffle plate back into position until it clicks
- Return the cleaner to the pool
Step 4: Verify Pump Flow Is At Least 25 GPM
The Kreepy Krauly manual specifies a minimum of 25 GPM from the pool pump. Single-speed pumps that are undersized or worn may not reach this threshold, particularly on longer suction runs or with aging impellers.
- Check the pump manufacturer specification for rated GPM at the system's operating head
- A worn impeller or mechanical seal leak can reduce actual output well below the nameplate rating — if other flow symptoms are present (weak return jets, low filter pressure), inspect the impeller
- If the pump is confirmed undersized for the cleaner's requirements, upgrading to a pump rated above 25 GPM at operating head is the only resolution
